Leafs to unveil new logo after All-Star break

From CBC Sports

The Toronto Maple Leafs are ready to reveal their new logo.

The team confirmed on their website that the new logo will be unveiled Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. on The Leaf: Blueprint, a Leafs TV television show produced by Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. The organization also released a video teaser on YouTube, which you can watch below.

Toronto’s Chris Creamer of spoke to CBC News about the logo change and said the team appears to be embracing their history with a modernized look.

“The most important thing is this isn’t going to be a drastic change,” Creamer said. “This is a team that is very, very respectful of their own tradition.”

The logo is expected to be a nod to the last Toronto team to win the Stanley Cup back in 1967.

“You get the sense it’s going to be a mix of the two logos they wore in the 1960s,” he said. “A hint of 1967 playoffs and before the switch.”

The change in logos came in time for the 1967 Stanley Cup playoffs when the Leafs commemorated Canada’s 100th birthday. The amount of points on the logo was reduced from 35 to 11 to honour the maple leaf that appears on the Canadian flag.

Creamer, who said he hasn’t seen the new logo, added the change will be part of a “natural progression of the logo” and unless you’re a diehard Leafs fan, you may not even notice a difference.

“This is just something that happens,” he said, pointing at Original Six teams such as the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens as teams that have tinkered with their looks over the past half-century.

Creamer also hinted at what the new team font may look like, which could possibly include an arching Toronto, as was the look in past decades. In the example posted on Twitter, the letters written on the Leafs crest reveal a combination of fonts used in past years.

The all-new uniforms will coincide with the team’s centennial season and marks the first time since the 1987-1988 season that the organization has decided to modify its primary logo.
